The 3/5-axis robots, mainly born in order to better satisfy particular needs requested by the injection moulding field, were created by the philosopher and mathematician René Descartes, one of the founders of mathematics, who used the X, Y, Z axes to define the area. In particular, these robots are provided by:

• Vertical Z axis, that allows to reach the area between the two semi moulds;
• X axis, represented by the horizontal crossbar that goes over the mould and the injection moulding machine perimeter;
• Y axis, that allows to move the vertical arm in line with the machine, in order to pick the moulded piece up and drop it out of the mould area.

This type of robot can be 3 or 5 axis and guarantees speed, thus reduced cycle time, installation on the machine as well as reduced costs. Perfect in case of limited space on the machine, it has a wider handling capacity on the X, Y, Z axis. Besides, it is the best solution for heavy loads.

If you need a robot that only removes the pieces from the mould in order to have reduced and repetitive cycles, a 3-axis robot is enough, while if you require additional handling functions inside the mould or out of the machine the 5-axis robot is best suited.
